It is the eighth installment in the Mario Kart series and the second Mario Kart title to use the Nintendo Network. The game was released worldwide throughout May 2014. An enhanced port was released for the Nintendo Switch in April 2017 under the name Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which featured a higher resolution, new characters, 200cc in Time Trials, and a revamped Battle Mode. On 2022-02-08, it was announced that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will receive paid downloadable content, known as the Booster Course Pass, which will feature 48 tracks and be released in six waves, each containing eight tracks. Currently, only one wave has released.
