Item Rain for Mario Kart 8 is a custom game mode created by ShyGuy. It is meant to replicate the Mario Kart Wii version by MrBean35000vr and Chadderz. In this mode items fall randomly from the sky to disrupt the players during a race or battle.

Specification

During Item Rain, one item will fall every 5 physics frames (thus 12 times per second) near one of the players in a round robin fashion. The amount of items any given player will see therefore depends on how many players there are in the race and also how close they are to other players.

Item Density
Number of Players Items near each player
1 12 per second
2 6 per second
3 4 per second
4 3 per second
5 2.4 per second
6 2 per second
7 1.7 per second
8 1.5 per second
9 1.3 per second
10 1.2 per second
11 1.1 per second
12 1 per second

The items are spawned at a random height and random distance from the player, partially depending on the player's speed and driving direction. They will spawn at most 512 units away from the player, always above the track. The items then fall naturally towards the ground.

Version-Unique Features

Users familiar with the Mario Kart Wii version may notice a few differences, namely:

  • Items in general will spawn closer to the players than in Mario Kart Wii. This is done to add compatibility for anti-gravity sections of tracks, so that as many items as possible spawn within the modified gravity.
  • Compared to Mario Kart Wii, less items will spawn overall, because fewer items spawn out of bounds. A welcome consequence is that the game should run at 60fps without lag.
  • When a player equips a bullet bill or piranha plant, their current item(s) will be discarded (if they have any).
  • The player may collect item boxes while using the bullet bill.
  • Colliding with a blue shell will cause the player to throw the blue shell towards first place.
  • Bloopers will always ink the player.
